Mr. Hathaway and Oakie
Mr. Hathaway is our Student Resource Officer here at DR. Although he is a member of our school, there is a lot you probably didn’t know about him on a deeper level. Mr. Hathaway’s main role here as an SRO is to form better relationships with the students. An SRO is someone students can come to if they need guidance. Any threats to the school or any matters that involve the police with any juveniles, he handles it. You are probably wondering how he became an SRO, or how someone can become one also. To become an SRO, you first need to be a police officer. Then, when the position opens, you need to apply and be selected by the Chief of Police. You have to attend specific training to become an SRO. Massachusetts has very specific rules for SROs, telling them specifically what they can and cannot do.
But on a more personal note, Mr. Hathaway is from here in Dighton and adores the fall season. He moved to Cape Cod and lived there for a while but eventually returned to Dighton. Growing up as a kid, Mr. Hathaway played many sports. In high school, he played basketball and baseball. Some of his favorite hobbies include cooking and spending time with his friends and family around the bonfire. Since he is a cook, he loves all types of food. As far as restaurants go, his favorite is Crisp on Cape Cod, which is a wood-fired pizza place that serves delicious Italian food.
Most of the kids here at DR are familiar with Mr. Hathaway’s dog, Oakie. He is a widely loved member of the DR community, and Mr. Hathaway and Oakie have made many memories. Mr. Hathaway specifically states that his favorite memory with Oakie is when this past summer they got to train at Battleship Cove in Fall River. Mr. Hathaway states, “It was neat taking him on the battleship.” Other than that, Mr. Hathaway says that he loves working here at DR and that some of his best experiences are being able to help students achieve the goals they never thought were possible. He also says that the staff here are extremely nice and are always welcoming to him and Oakie. In fact, Mr. Hathaway’s personality really shines through when he says that the one thing at the school that really agitates him is the speed bumps in front of our school.
