Introduction: We’ve seen horror movies, we’ve seen romance, but the twisted 2026 film Obsession sets itself apart by pushing how terrifyingly far love, wishes, and obsession can go. Obsession was written, directed, and edited by filmmaker Curry Barker, and it is his first studio feature. The film stars American actress Inde Navarrette as Nikki, and American actor Michael Johnston as Bear. The simple premise of the story is that Bear, a music store employee, is in love with his coworker and good friend Nikki, but cannot bring himself to confess his feelings. Instead he makes a wish with a cheap magic gag gift wishing that she loved him. It works. Somewhat. Until it doesn’t.

Plot: The film follows a music store worker, Bear, as he navigates through his unrequited love with his coworker and childhood friend Nikki. In preparation to ask her out, he purchases a magic gag gift for her, the “One Wish Willow.” However, when he finally has the chance to confess his feelings, he gets too nervous. Instead, he ends up snapping the wish gift himself as a last minute throw away wish, wishing that Nikki would love him “more than anyone in the entire world.”

The wish works immediately, causing Nikki to change. At first, Bear is excited and welcoming to the fact that his crush finally loves him back. However, Bear’s wish goes horribly wrong as Nikki’s “love” quickly escalates and spirals into an uncontrollable fixation with Bear in which she abandons her own life and agency. Her “love” transforms into a violent and unsettling obsession.

The exposition of the movie does a great job of setting the scene, and building the relationships between the characters. We see how Bear may struggle with some insecurities, and not have the courage to ask Nikki out. The scenes leading up to the wish help establish an uneasy feeling, which blend well into the next events of the film.

As the film progresses, it is revealed that Nikki is essentially trapped in her own body, experiencing deep psychological pain and torture. In some terrifying scenes, the real Nikki is able to break through the magical curse to cry, beg for help, and scream. Bear makes some questionable choices as he starts piecing together what is truly happening to Nikki. In one scene, she is able to break through while her body is sleeping and pleads for Bear to kill her and put her out of her suffering. Bear’s response is, “What would be so bad? What is so bad about being with me?”

Chris Stuckmann’s Obsession Movie Review focuses on this scene and Bear’s response to Nikki’s request in which Stuckmann shares that for him, “that is when that character crosses the line between accidentally doing something he wished he never did, to realizing what he’s doing, the consequences of what he’s doing, and how it is having an effect on this girl, and still going forward.”

This scene seems to solidify the change of Bear’s character from an awkward, lovesick “nice guy,” into a more selfish and morally gray character who ultimately gets consumed by the consequences of his actions. A character who slowly becomes the villain in his own story. It can make the viewer start to wish for his demise and downfall.

Although, the film does leave some questions unanswered, whether on purpose or not. In a way, the unanswered leaves room for uncertainty, further expanding the unsettling nature of the movie as well as leaving room to add onto the story in the future or let viewers create their own interpretations and thoughts.

Obsession strays from the traditional monster horror scares and uses a more supernatural and physiological approach to induce fear and unease. In addition, the cinematography and acting truly sells the scares present in the film.

Cinematography:

The cinematography present in the film Obsession creates the perfect environment for the plot to brilliantly unfold. Film cinematographer Taylor Clemons masterfully plays with the scenes and camera work that transports viewers into the world of Obsession. Using a variety of techniques, such as: angles, zoom, lighting, tracking, and space, Clemons captures the perfect scenes creating the eerie atmosphere of the film.

A few key scenes focus on how Nikki is presented. In some shots, Nikki’s face is obscured, adding to the unsettling factor of the unknown.

Some scenes were very gory, however the limits pushed by the film and being able to go as far as they did are what make Obsession unique.

Acting:

Obsession stars Inde Navarrette as Nikki, and Michael Johnston as Bear. Navarrette’s chilling performance is incredible, and truly embodies the character of Nikki as she transforms into cursed Nikki. The way that Navarrette is able to change expressions so quickly and with such range was interesting to watch. Nikki’s character is unpredictable and terrifying, which is solidly portrayed by the extreme expressions, movements, and actions that Navarette performs.

Michael Johnston plays Bear. Johnston’s performance captures the duality of Bear as a vulnerable and deeply insecure yet dangerously entitled young man.

The acting truly makes the characters feel real and grounded, which contributes to the magic and supernatural aspects of the film feeling more realistic.

Conclusion:

While the general plot is something that has been seen before, “wish gone wrong”, the way that Obsession pushes limits with its unique, horrifyingly dark twists is what sets it apart. The film might not necessarily be a traditional horror film, however it definitely creates an unsettling atmosphere that creeps under your skin.

It is clear that Curry Barker and the entire crew of Obsession put great care and effort into the film, and all of the aspects of the film work together nicely to create the final product.

My personal rating of Curry Barker’s 2026 film Obsession is 8.5/10.
