What is “National College Decision Day?”
National College Decision Day, celebrated annually on May 1st, marks the official date for United States high school seniors to submit their college enrollment deposits and announce their post-secondary plans. This marks a milestone and defining step toward their futures and represents not only the end of their high school careers, but also their accumulation of years of hard work and perseverance. While it is emphasized that this is college decision day, many schools also highlight the other plans students may have after high school that are equally as important. Whether it be college, military branches, apprenticeship, trade school, or gap years, seniors all throughout the United States are often recognized by their school through assemblies, pep rallies, signing days, or other activities.
Where The Class of 2026 Is Headed
This year, the D-R class of 2026 had a plethora of students accepted to a wide range of institutions, ranging from large public universities to small liberal arts colleges to competitive colleges with a less than 20% acceptance rate. Students will be attending a diverse range of colleges, including Northeastern University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, College of the Holy Cross, Tufts University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Stevens Institute of Technology, Bridgewater State University, UMASS Dartmouth, UMASS Amherst, and many more. Some seniors have also committed to specialized programs such as 5-year master’s (4+1 program). For many seniors, this decision process was both exciting and stressful. “Applications were stressful with a lot to do, but once they were done, it was easier to know where I wanted to be. There was a lot of uncertainty when I was still applying, but once I narrowed it down, it was easy to choose which one was the best fit for me,” said Laura Cruz, a senior who plans to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to study mathematics. All of these college acceptances can be found on the official 2026 acceptance scroll here or outside the DRRHS Guidance Office! Decisions can also be found on the drdecisions_26 Instagram page.
In addition to college commitments, various members of the senior class have also chosen alternative paths for their post-secondary success. Some of these opportunities include the Marine Corps, U.S. Army, and employment, highlighting the variety of opportunities available after high school.
A Day of Recognition and Celebration
To celebrate National College Decision Day, Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School hosted an event for students during their first period class on May 1st, allowing students to share their plans and recognize each other’s accomplishments through group pictures. Each senior who attended celebrated their post-secondary plans by wearing clothing that represented their plans after high school.
As the class of 2026 prepares to graduate in the upcoming month, May 1st serves as a moment of reflection and anticipation for them. While students undoubtedly will be heading in different directions, they share a common achievement of taking the next step toward their futures.
