Spirit week, one of the biggest weeks of the year here at DR. Some of the spirit week themes this year included Holiday Day, Dynamic Duo/Squad Day, Country versus Country Club, Meme Day, and finally Green and Gold Day.
The first day of Spirit Week was Holiday Day. This day consisted of each grade dressing up as a different holiday. The freshmen were assigned Thanksgiving, the sophomores dressed in St. Patrick’s Day attire, the juniors got winter holidays, and finally the seniors repped the Fourth of July. Some people who participated in spirit week went all out, including some people dressing up as a turkey, or Santa Claus, or even an elf. On the other hand, some dressed up but more casually, such as just wearing red, white, and blue, or Thanksgiving dinner outfits, or simply just wearing green.
The second day of spirit week was Dynamic Duo/Squad Day. Some people dressed with one other person; there were some who dressed up with their whole friend group. There were people matching casual clothes to fancy clothes like suits and dresses. People dressed up as cartoon characters or actual people that play in movies.
The third spirit week day was country versus country club. During this say, students either dressed up like country people with plaid, cowboy hats, cowboy boots, and jeans. The other option was for students to dress like they were going to the country club. Outfits for this theme included wearing leggings with workout jackets, tennis skirts, sunglasses or even quarter-zip sweaters with jeans.
On the fourth day of spirit week, it was meme day. On this day people dressed up as different memes, varying from the 6-7 trend to the Mean Girls meme “She doesn’t even go here.” Students and staff wore clothing that individuals have worn in memes. To make their meme more identifiable, some students wore signs that showcased the meme they are dressed as.
On the final day of spirit week, it was green and gold day for the pep rally. For green and gold day only seniors are allowed to wear green, while the other grades wear yellow/gold to show school spirit. Students dressed up in tutus, necklaces and face paint.
Besides the spirit week themes, there were also spirit week games going on. Some of the spirit week games and activities included Penny Wars, the Can Drive, finding spirit sticks, and of course dressing-up.
The spirit week game Penny Wars is a game between all four grades where students donate pennies to their grade while trying to avoid students from other grades dropping dollars in your jug. When another grade puts a dollar bill into another grade’s jug, that subtracts money from said grade. The goal of the game is to donate pennies but to not have people put dollar bills in your container. At the end of the game, whichever grade has the most wins gets spirit week points.
Another spirit week game that went on was the Can Drive. The Can Drive is an opportunity for each of the grades to bring in canned goods to be donated to the local food pantry. For this game, students brought in canned goods and placed them in their grade-designated bin. At the end of the drive, the cans were counted up, and whichever grade donated the most cans received spirit week points. The seniors ended up winning this spirit week game with 1380 cans. The juniors had 462 cans. The sophomores had 313 cans, and the freshmen had 315 cans.
The next game deals with finding spirit sticks. This is when there are decorated sticks placed around the school for grades to find. Each spirit stick is worth a different amount of points, varying from 50 to over 200 points. This spirit week game was a tricky one for the grades, not knowing where they will be hiding. The grade that ended up winning the spirit stick game was the seniors with 1172 points.
The final spirit week game that went on was the actual dressing-up part of spirit week. This means that whichever grade had the most people dress up for said day received points. So if you went all out for spirit week, you probably earned your grade some spirit week points.
Spirit week at DR is immensely fun. It encourages students and staff to dress up to support their grade while offering some friendly competition. Every year the questions of “Who will find the spirit sticks?”, and “Who is going to donate the most cans for the can drive?” arise. These are just some of the reasons why spirit week at DR is amazing and so much fun! Of course, spirit week with the annual pep rally the day before the Thanksgiving football game against Seekonk.
